The single best thing that we've learned to bring is a carabiner to latch on to your backpack so that you can hook your sandals or shoes on quickly without getting sand all over everything. There is a lot of putting on/taking off of the footwear.

^^ yes to that. kick on/off sandals, (just normal ones i guess)are better than chacos or anything fancy too, since like you said they're on and off a lot.
also. camelback. fill it with ice before you leave your place, they let us in with the ice and no water most of the time
and just a courtesy tip, walk with toes up when walking around people on towels

Do people take their shoes off a lot? I've done Bonnaroo and urban festivals before and comfortable footwear was always the most important thing for me, so I'm struggling a bit on what to wear to Hangout. I don't find flip flops comfortable at all, but I do have a pair of Keens that aren't terrible. Is it more important to be able to take your shoes off/put them on quickly than worrying about extra padding for miles of walking at this fest?

The two main stages are in the sand so everyone is barefoot for those. Then the other three stages, merch and vendors are all on the hot pavement. So the key is having something that you can throw on the ground in front of you and slide into quickly once you get to the end of the sand cause there are tons of people behind you with the same thing in mind. And the grounds aren't nearly as big as other festivals. It's all located on probably 15 acres, where Bonnaroo is 700 acres, so comfortable shoes are not nearly as important for Hangout. I hope this helped.

Most important tip...stay hydrated! Being from Alabama I can tell you it will sneak up on you. The hot sun, breeze blowing, a beer in hand...it's the life:) Drink lots of water before you go, during the day and at night before you go to sleep. Pedialite is also good if you are consuming adult beverages all day it balances the electrolites.

And if you do wear flip-flops and have to buy a pair, buy a nice QUALITY pair. I learned the hard way last year; bought a cheap $1 pair and discovered 4 blisters on my foot Friday night after the fest.

If you plan on purchasing alcohol, go ahead and get id'ed to get your 21+ bracelet early in the day. Please don't be that idiot who is fumbling for his id when the beer line is stretched a mile long later in the evening.

blank: Thank you SO much, this is very helpful. It's hard to tell the scale of the site so knowing it's much smaller than Bonnaroo is a big help. I was expecting to have to walk about 15-20 miles a day like with Bonnaroo, but since everything is much closer together at Hangout I won't worry about that.

Good information. I made a note on the carabineer.
Shoes - I bought a pair of Keen's at the Foley outlets two years ago...awesome. Easy off and on, protect my toes. Ever heard the Jimmy Buffett song about "cut my heal had to cruise on back home"? The sand is a mine field after 30,000 beer cans, aluminum packets, and whatever lands in it after the evening show. They do clean the beach daily which is good, but love my Keen's.
Sun - Plenty for face and back. Like spf 50 if you are light complexion and in it. I recommend a Wal-mart straw hat from home for $4.00 over one at the HOF for $20. I have lost a couple hats. Ditto keep an eye on sunglasses. When night time comes, stuff tends to get lost.
Night time - The Eddie Bauer hat for cheap with a little high powered light in the bill...wonderful. A lot of happy gals, me too, for finding their stuff in the sand at night. I carry a beat up old backpack with water bottle, hat, hard candy, camera at night and it has worked out well for me. Camelback during the day with plenty of water.
Hydration -I will have to try the ice cubes this year. Agree with all that staying hydrated is important. Alcohol will actually work against you on hydration. Most of the people who get in trouble at festivals are doing some crazy combination of drugs, even legit prescription, too much sun, not enough water and alcohol. Avoid excessing those combinations and your chance of having a great Bama day are good.
There are some really super folks working first aid and security. Help they when you can by taking care of yourself. Enjoy!

Hello everyone! I will be attending Hangout for the first time this year. We're driving from Dallas TX and super excited! I have a couple questions that I haven't found the answer to after searching the board.
1) it seems like most people bring blankets or beach towels to sit on. do you guys tend to leave these in one spot all day? or move them whenever the group moves?
2) what time do people usually start lining up to get in? and how long does that usually take for GA?
3) seems like most of you carry backpacks. what would you say are the essentials to have with you on a typical day at hangout?
sorry if the answers to these are already posted somewhere... thanks in advance for your help!

If you're going for some earlier acts, you'll get through security in five minutes. If you wait until night to come, your wait will be longer. I'm always in before sunset and have never waited more than ten minutes in the last two years. I have heard of people having to wait upwards of 30 minutes later on in the night. 3) I carry sunscreen, sun glasses, hat, towel for the pool, ID, money, phone, and a clip for my sandals.

last year went to GovBall and after the monsoon it was mud everywhere. bought a pair of water shoes since i didn't have any rainboots. this isn't the exact pair, but you get the idea. added a pair of dr. scholl's inserts as well and they were perfect. offer much more stability on uneven surfaces than flops. used them at bonnarroo as well and they held up great. Water Shoesperfect for the beach because you can slide them on and off and they have tags at the back that can be hung from a carabiner.

I would be okay with this. I'd love to have a place to put my towel and stuff when I'm not at the VIP pool. Usually, my date ends up being the pack mule.
