I've been trying to find out about this myself. I've got a big group and having a totem to bring us all in would be really nice. I see that flags and flag poles are prohibited as listed on the Hangout festival information page.

Here's an email response from a Hangout rep I contacted: "Unfortunately totem poles fall under the flag poles or poles category of prohibited items for safety reasons. See about exploring some other options such as walkie talkies." I'm guessing we will be seeing less totems unless they make it past the gates this year.

I have done totems at other festivals and they are a life saver. I will just have to get more creative with what I will use I guess.

I think I can wrap a retractable golf ball retriever in a blanket and sneak that in. Those extend about 7 feet. I could have my brother design a flag to attach to it. Only idea I have this far that seems feasible.

The group I was in had one and noticed them all over the place. I think the issue is getting in the way of the performers. If you have a shorter, say 10' conduit you could assemble in a couple sections with a small character on top that did not block 5' x 7' like a flag, you might get that in. We did.

Did you try to sneak it in or just go in with it? Was the conduit already assembled?

Assembled. Plastic white PVC pipe. Again, it didn't stick out much and did not block people's view. If everyone brought in a huge state flag, etc., I can see where that might get out of hand. I guess you can try it the first day and then you'll know. If you have a large group, great way to keep folks together. The alternative is to create meeting places i.e. halfway between the mixing board and the beer stand....that also worked for us.
