It seems like everyone wants Umphreys every year. Granted, they are probably my favorite current jam band, but they aren't the kind of act I want to see at a fest every year. Wouldn't you prefer some new blood? What is it about them that people freak out about so much? I'm kinda over jam bands, though I love rocking. I just prefer the stylings of Los Lobos, My Morning Jacket and Neil Young, which are all rock bands that jam from time to time. I get tired of the excessive noodling.

I've never been a jam fan in the least, but I can understand the frustration of the Hangout jam fans. But you are right; festivals booking a lot of the same bands over and over again seems like a waste of money and time to me. Then again, The Flaming Lips and Michael Franti are mainstays at this fest (though neither played last year).

When are they releasing the next wave of acts? Next wave of acts coming out Thursday along with the announcement of the Thursday pre-show---- according to hangout's twitter at least/ Although I may have been a little buzzed when I read the tweet, so take my post with a grain of salt/six pack of beer

I agree Bob, there's so many recycled line ups through the festival market every year. Every jam fest is the same as the next. Wakarusa, Summer Camp etc. They alwaysss have umphreys, STS9 and all of those sorts. I mean I love them but don't need them at a festival like hangout.

Wakarusa, Summer Camp etc. They alwaysss have umphreys, STS9 and all of those sorts. I mean I love them but don't need them at a festival like hangout. Hangout's roots are that of a jam festival. They basically made it a new festival this year, that's why I'm upset. Just compare the types of bands this year to the past lineups. As someone who has been to all but the first hangout, I don't think it's unfair to expected some continuity in regard to the type of acts booked at a festival which ensures I commit to tickets each year. Sucks that Huku isn't booking. If lineup isn't better next year, this will probably be my last. I do love the beach but this lineup really isn't that great no matter how I try to spin it and keep looking at the lineup. Beach is the big pull this year. Headliners are undeniably weak, where the hell is my classic rock headliner. If they book ABB I'll shutup on that. Upper middle card is fine. Normal middle card is non-existent. Like the drop off in popularity of the bands after Zedd/Gambino and especially after Fitz is CRAZY. Fitz and then Capital Cities and Needtobreathe, wtf. Lower-middle and lower card definitely have some great ones but also is lacking. Hate to be a debbie downer but it's true. This year did not live up to the past ones. Especially as an anniversary year. Did they not have enough money? If they did, who in the world are they paying so much for? I don't see any bands on there commanding much money except the headliners. Where is the typically solid middle card? Jam bands are my favorite because they make their money off of their live shows and thus put maximum effort to mix it up and put on a great show every time. They don't just play the same set every show like most bands. That's why I like them and I appreciate good musicianship and improv. Now, all I have to work with is STS9 and ALO. And MAYBE trombone shorty and moon taxi if you want to throw them in there. Compare that to past years and I don't think it's unfair for people with my music taste to be disappointed. And if we are talking about recycled festival lineups, you can now put Hangout in the category of Governors Ball, Sasquatch, Counterpoint, etc. The lineup is similar to those now. Whereas before I saw it above those. Sorry for venting. Obviously this is all my personal opinion. Just sad my fav festival has decided to go the commercial music route when it really had something special going. Hope Hangout shuts me up with solid additions. Flame away.

Sall good, Horns. I feel ya. And you make valid points to support your feelings. I have a feeling that you're going to be much happier when the additions come out, but we'll see. I just don't want Umph every year, or anyone, for that matter. Also, check out Los Lobos, if you haven't already.

Los Colognes are deep undercard but their live stuff is very jam oriented. Jerry riffs and a Petty feel. The studio CD is not quite the same. But I'm with you. I'm hoping for some more jam stuff too. I also agree that the bookng agents get the same bands for the same types of festivals. Outside of the Foo Fighters, Firefly has almost all of the same bands. We have their #2 and #3 headliners (as our #3 and #4 I might add), Pretty Lights, Portugal, etc etc

I'm all for different bands each year, just give me some different bands that will jam my face off haha.

They definitely sound grateful deady and have that on-the-road vibe with some reggae thrown in. On a more positive note than my last post, I've definitely found some new (for me) bands that I'm pumped about including Los Colognes (jammy/dead vibe), Bad Suns (damn that is catchy stuff; see "Cardiac Arrest" or "20 years"), Wild Cub (see "Thunder Clatter"), Balkan Beat Box (think a more peppy Thievery Corporation with a spanish flare), Bronze Radio Return (think mumford/lumineers type), Desert Noises (folksy rock; see "Oak Tree"), RDGLDGRN (I don't usually like this type of music but these guys are DAMN good for some reason...Pharrell helped produce album and Dave Grohl played drums on it so if not me, trust them; see "I Love Lamp" or "Doing the Most"), The Wans (ROCK N ROLL with a lil blues, see "I Like to Party" and "Landlord Blues Cafe"). Also, bigger ones who are underrated: Allen Stone (saw him at Bonnaroo waiting for ALO and had never heard of him; had me singing and dancing) and ALO (from Jack Johnson's label; happy laid back with well written songs and will jam your face off; see "I Love Music" and "Girl I Wanna Lay You Down"), Shakey Graves (He plays all the time here so I've seen him plenty of times; Damn this man is incredible live; youtube search for "Roll the Bone live" and you'll understand), SOJA (even if you don't like reggae give these guys a chance; see "I Don't Wanna Wait"). O and Hangout just posted "In other good news... We're about to announce the lineup for the Thursday Kick-off Party! Festival ticket holders will have first dibs."

Horns, I'm actually very interested to see what sts9 does now that murph has left the band (bass player). I've seen tribe 58 times now, hangout was suppose to be my 60th show but they canceled winter tour due to murph departing. I'm just shocked the band isn't breaking up and they are actually replacing the bass player. This hasn't happened in the jam community in a loooong time.

Very curious myself, I'm a pretty big tribe fan. Not quite to your level, but I've seen 16 shows from them. From what I've been told, Murph was essentially forced out due to his abusing drugs and wanting to take the band in a more electronic direction than the rest of them wanted. This is why they never finished that album and cancelled their tour without at least playing the dates they had booked. I am hopeful that the band goes back to its roots of more jazzy d'n'b sound. Very curious to see who his replacement is. As you pointed out, it will be interesting because such an integral member has not been replaced in the community for a long time. In my opinion, he isn't that great of a bass player so I don't see it as a big loss musically. I think it could potentially be for the best as I like the old sts9 sound better than what they have been doing recently. However, he was definitely the "face" of the band and it will be interesting to see what happens next. I'm very pumped to see them.

Ya, I've met Murph a few times, Mayan Holidaze and red rocks. I honestly always got a bad vibe from the guy. The rest of the band is so nice especially phipps and hunter. I am actually very glad we won't be hearing murph scream into the mic anymore haha. A big rumor is that Alana Rocklin is going to be the replacement. She sat in with tribe on this last new years run. Shes a classically trained bassist, this could be an amazing new road for STS9. I too hope they return to their roots, this last year I have been distant to the 9. If I hear scheme one more time I will off myself
